"Dawn breaks in Rhodes" A Dodecanese feast starting from Rhodes
Christina Koza & Giannis Kladakis
Sunday, November 29 | Start time 15:00
On Sunday, November 29, Christina Koza and Giannis Kladakis meet at PERAN – the city's cafe-aman, for a Sunday feast with songs, melodies, and dances from Rhodes and the Dodecanese islands.
Under the title "Dawn breaks in Rhodes", two artists with deep roots in the island's music invite us to a celebration where tradition remains alive.
Starting from Rhodes, the program opens up to Dodecanese music, connecting beloved melodies with the unique interpretive identity of the two protagonists.
Christina Koza, originating from Archangelos in Rhodes, has brought the songs of her homeland to diaspora communities and musical meetings in Europe, America, and Australia. She studied classical singing at the Rhodes branch of the Hellenic Conservatory and participated for many years in the Experimental Choir of Rhodes, maintaining a constant bond with traditional music.
A special place in her career is held by the recording of the Archangelos tradition on a double CD with 30 songs and melodies. Through archival research and listening to the elders, she collected wedding, table, religious, and dance songs, contributing to the preservation and dissemination of a repertoire tied to the life and customs of her home.
Giannis Kladakis, born in 1975 in Kremasti, Rhodes, is a virtuoso of the Dodecanese lyra and a researcher of the Rhodian musical tradition. His first contact with the lyra of Vasilis Karagiannakis, the well-known "Vasilaras", at the age of about seven, was decisive. At thirteen, he acquired his first lyra and apprenticed with Giorgos Paragios.
From a young age, he traveled through the villages of Rhodes, recording songs, mantinades, melodies, and stories from the elderly. His research and artistic activity have contributed to the preservation of the Rhodian lyra and the documentation of the island's musical heritage. In 2009, he published the collection "Traditional Songs of Rhodes", with old narrative, devotional, carnival, and other songs. His personal discography and his participation in record releases, including those of the Greek Music Archive, continue this effort.
Joining them, Despoina Giannakli on santouri and Nikolas Aggelopoulos on laouto complete the musical company.
